In this performance, Sammy Baloji brings to life the musical and pœtic universe of Pasolini’s manuscript 'Il padre selvaggio' from a contemporary and Congolese perspective. 'A Pœtic Memento of K(C)ongo' offers a unique musical journey of discovery based on the dialogue between three original musical creations. The first piece is the polish composer by Szymon Brzóska. His original work is inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, a novel centred on human cruelty, colonial greed and the atrocities to which racism leads. The second piece is a composition by the Congolese musician Pytshens Kambilo, who drew inspiration from the Congolese rumba of the post-1974 era. It is an exploration of the popular Congolese musical genre that is rooted in urban life and promotes liberation. Finally, the third musical guest is the Jamaican Satch Hoyt, who explores the historical and imaginary journeys of Black peoples across the Atlantic, in an attempt to reawaken the memory of the African diaspora. Together, these works, alongside Sammy Baloji’s scenographic interventions, including a textile veil printed with a photograph from The Tree of Authenticity depicting the tropical forest of Yangambi, and an image from the Kolwezi series showing the red earth of copper and cobalt mines transform the venue into a space of resonance. Extending Pasolini’s unrealised vision into a visual register, these elements interact through contrasting light, shadow, and layering, revealing and concealing fragments of history. The performance reflects on the motivations and suffering in Pasolini’s narrative, which are still present in Congolese society today. The greed of the mining companies, the impact of exploitation and the fragmentation of the social fabric resulting from ethnic conflicts have lost none of their relevance. Three original music composition enter into dialogue with one another and establish a link with the architecture of the space. The first concert took place in Bozar in June 2025 and the second in Barbican in June 2026.
